Acro is short for acroyoga, although it could easily be short for acrobatics - because there is a fair bit of acrobatics required.
If parents can remember giving their kids “aeroplanes” - lifting them up into the air with your feet or lower legs as they stretch out their arms and pretend to be jet fighters - then acroyoga is a similar concept, only with full-sized adult humans involved and fewer aircraft noises.
Acro is a relatively new activity to New Zealand, says event organiser Sam Jameson - but he reckons it will become ubiquitous before long.

What to Expect at an Acroyoga Event?

Workshops
Acroyoga workshops consist of rounds of the teachers demonstrating a trick, explaining what to do, showing how to spot the trick and then everyone having the option to try it.

Jams
Acroyoga jams are free time where everyone can play and practice whatever tricks they like.

Community
Acroyoga requires a feeling of trust, safety and connection. This creates a strong community where these are the core values.

Spotting
Spotting involves one or more people supporting those practicing a trick to make it safe.

Thai Massage
Thai Massage is a form of therapeutic massage that involves applying pressure and moving the body to release tension and increase relaxation.
